I have a bee in my bonnet.
In the Old World (i.e. before Covid19), my 3-month Sales Mastery Program was building momentum. Given the uncertainty and challenges, I understand it is going to be much more difficult to get companies to invest in training and development, though some still will, so that’s not really my problem.
Over the years I have had many, many conversations with people about training and development - most of it funded by their employer, not many put their hand in their own pocket to invest and secure their future and that of their family.
I continued to check in on my prospects for the Sales Mastery Program to understand if they wanted to register for a shorter, more cost-effective option – ‘B2B Selling in the Covid19 World & Beyond’.
The very same people who were keen to have their employer pay $6000 were not willing to put $500 of their own money towards their professional development. This is what Carol Dweck calls a ‘Fixed Mindset’ as opposed to a ‘Growth Mindset’ (see table of the differences below), it holds people back from enjoying the emotional AND financial benefits of investing in themselves.
Gratefully and most fortunately, lifelong learning was instilled as a value in my early years and served me well as I have to face the challenges that invariably come up throughout one’s commercial career.
As Gail Sheehy said
“If we don’t change, we don’t grow. If we don’t grow, we aren’t really living.”
My investment in a range of courses and coaches over the years has been looked upon extremely favourably and has got me to the table (along with offers) a number of times with one of my (eventual) managers saying that it was most unusual and that he wished more of his team would do the same to protect and grow their employability.
This is my BIG Problem.
As individuals we need to take ultimate responsibility for our professional development. It doesn’t have to be money, some of the programs on a variety of platforms are free but worthless, others relatively cheap but priceless.
Most of us have gained a little time thanks to Covid 19 and using this extra time wisely to learn skills that will help us thrive in the new world, will serve us far more in the short, medium and longer terms.
Would love to know your thoughts.
P.S feel free to take a look my B2B Selling in the Covid19 World & Beyond program, it is 1 x hour per day online workshop 3 x days per week for 2 weeks with other exercises / resources on alternate days to embed the learnings.
